BORN / TECHMAHINDRA
Working within an agile environment there's many client share-outs where we present our ideas. We needed an easier way to share the strategic basis of our wireframes to clients, and validate our thinking.
The Challenge
Designers are often tasked with building things from a blank slate, this can lead to sub-optimal design choices being made. Grounding your design process in evidence-based design thinking and research can lead to much better design outputs and can also empower designers to align to common patterns that are successful and have more time available to focus on bespoke design elements.
Over several months in 2022, our design team developed a plugin built into Figma that pulled research from multiple trusted sources (NN Group, Baymard etc.) to craft a database of 300+ pieces of research that can be baked into design presentations and annotations for client handoff.
Each time we encountered a gap in our research for a particular UX or UI element, we investigated the existing research and incorporated it in our tool.
The Process
Tool had 12+ categories for common themes like accessibility, dark patterns, ecommerce etc.
Tool aligned to 6 heuristic categories like usability, find-ability etc.
300+ abstracts for research links were baked into every observation or entry.
Tool was attached to every project started as an agency and tool used at multiple times in the design process
100+ psychology insights by growth.design were added for times where research links were less useful and the designer needed rely on design best practices.

Deliverables
After completion of the tool, we have since expanded it's capabilities to capture more areas of design. We have used the tool for almost two years now. In that time we have used it to justify design decisions to clients, we've shaped our designs to better align with evidence-based insights and the tool has also helped jr/intermediate designers establish a stronger mental model for design work.
Eventually we began to use the tool in our hueristic evaluations.
